Nigeria is a great country with lot of resources that can keep the country in a very high standard of economy. Many Nigerians look at these resources and think that they can misuse rather than make use of their potential and make our community a better environment for all citizens. Waste management, the treatment and reuse of solid wastes, is vital. There are various types of solid waste including municipal (residential, institutional, commercial), agricultural, and special (health care, household hazardous wastes, sewage sludge).”
Climate change is emerging as a major challenge for modern every community and the basic processes of climate change are well understood to accelerate in the future. The diverse, severe impacts around the world, much of the warming, is due to human emissions of greenhouse gases.
Climate change has eaten deep into Nigeria’s environment. Yet, the government has abandoned many things concerning the wellbeing of the people, and has mismanaging the climate change fund. There is a need to call on the present government and Nigerians in Diasporas to help with what the country is facing.
How do we make people feel waste management isn’t a problem but a solution to climate change?
Most people in Lagos, Nigeria, have no idea why there is such a fuss about waste management. People are mainly motivated by what they get in return. However, once they tap into waste management, they notice all the other benefits: cleanliness, less flooding, and less disease. Then they understand why it’s a good idea to carry on doing it. A good example of a waste management company in Nigeria is called Wecyclers. Not only do they recycle the waste, but they also help people make money from it for a sustainable living.
Waste Management can help curb the issues created by climate change, but can also help the economy. Waste management tools should be directed towards the effective mitigation of Green House Gases (GHG) and the provision of sustainable co-benefits. Waste prevention, along with waste minimization, material recovery, recycling, and reuse show a growing potential for indirect reduction of Green House Gases (GHG) emissions. The results are not only decreased waste generation, but lower raw material consumption, reduced energy demand, and fossil fuel substitution or avoidance.
The most urgent issue for Nigeria is post-consumer waste. This could be a renewable energy resource, where the value is exploited through biomass production, anaerobic digester biogas, thermal processes, and even through landfill gas utilization. Education is a key to push sustainable environment through waste management. There is much to learn about waste management in order to ensure that we are safe.
Nigerians can and must keep the environment safe. As leaders, it is our choice, and our government’s task, to know how to dispose of waste. As a Climate Change activist I chose this platform to #Call4Climate solution with a way of tapping into Waste Management opportunities. Brilliant idea to motivate the people to recycle. It is very important to show them the core of this issue, to understand why it is so important for them and how it influence over their lifestyle. Waste management is a problem which regards not just Nigeria, but all the countries around the world!
