A CHANGED LIFE! In addition to the Shelter for homeless people, the Chattanooga Rescue Mission has a drug and alcohol program. This is called the Christian Life Program. In May, a woman graduated after one year in our program. At her graduation, she told the audience that she had been a Christian for one year now and had also been drug-free for one year. She has become a different woman.
When she came, Joan (not her real name), was a drug addict, was in trouble with the law, had very serious medical problems, and was extremely fearful. She received medical care here in the community, through the various agencies available. She is now much healthier, but is still receiving treatment for a back problem.
Joan’s fear has decreased and the furrow is gone from her forehead. She still struggles when her children have issues. Most of the time she remembers that God is always there, and He cares for her without anyone reminding her. Her countenance is now bright of the time and she wears a smile.
A court-appointed attorney helped Joan avoid prison, then worked with the court to allow her to serve her community service at the Mission. She completed her 160 hours working under the supervision of the staff at the Chattanooga Rescue Mission. There are still some fines, but the lawyer got those greatly reduced. He also talked with the court and arranged for the fines to be paid after she has finished her training and is employed.
Joan heard of Chattanooga Endeavors and was given a reference from her probation officer. The probation officer helped her get enrolled in classes there. She is learning how to live in the outside world and how to resist temptations. She will receive training in some skill for which she has aptitude, then find work.
How much brighter the outlook from drug addict to self-supporting citizen. Much can be done when a person is willing to change and the entire community comes together to help. Thank you, Chattanooga!
